+ Brainport Design for Happy Living

17-25 OCTOBRE 2009|
exhibition and two seminars
The première of the fourth Made in Brainport exposition ‘Brainport Design for Happy Living’ takes place during Dutch Design Week. The theme is ‘Creating a Caring Society’.

Under the same umbrella, Eindhoven and Helsinki are currently competing as finalists for the title of World Design Capital 2012. With conceptual and industrial design products, ‘Brainport Design for Happy Living’ represents the unique nature of design from Brainport Eindhoven.

Designers and producers notice that consumers are paying more and more attention to the real added value of products. It happens less frequently that they let themselves be carried away by the delusion of the day. It is from this point of view that Design Connection Brainport shows a selection of 12 ‘care and attention’ design products. Kiki van Eijk’s Soft Lamp, for instance, fascinates people and tempts them to touch it: an ‘implicit’ meaning. On the other hand, there is a product like the Bobike bicycle seat, of which the usefulness is obvious. Other examples are the chair Spine by TTTVO and a product like the Sensual Stimulator by Philips, which enables people to offer one another care and attention.

Next year, after the show in Eindhoven, the exhibition will be on show somewhere else in the world.
Venue: Nieuwe Emmasingel 56, 5611 AM Eindhoven, behind the Admirant building, opposite the Witte Dame
Exhibition: from 17 up to 25 October, daily from 11.00 am – 07.00 pm.

Two seminars
During Dutch Design Week, there will be two seminars about Brainport Design for Happy Living: a forum on 21 October and a lunch meeting on 22 October.

Design for Happy Living forum| 21 October
After a word of welcome by deputy mayor Marriët Mittendorff, designer Kiki van Eijk, and DDW director Hans Robertus, an inspiring forum will follow in cooperation with publisher Snor and Studio Boot. They published the book ‘Fred & Wilma in de Vinex wijk’ (Fred & Wilma in the new urban district). Modern man in a prehistoric situation. Well-known designers offer do-it-yourself instructions how to make your own furniture, how to create a vegetable garden, or how to provide your own energy. During the forum, the designers of Atelier NL,  Lonny van Rijswijck and Nadine Sterk, explain how they have accomplished the by now world famous project ‘Uit de klei getrokken’ (Extracted from the clay) using a bucket and a spade. Nacho Carbonell, one of the exhibitors at the exposition Brainport Design for Happy Living, talks about his narrative furniture line Evolution – as a comment on the information society. There will be no time to sit back and relax during this meeting: House of Origin prepares do-it-yourself snacks from their book Raapsteeltje (Turnip top) – and shows the audience all the Dutch-grown things that you can eat, or that you have forgotten about.
Venue: Nieuwe Emmasingel 36, behind the Admirant building
Time: Wednesday 21 October, 04.00 pm - 07.30 pm
Registration:info@designconnectionbrainport.nl stating ’Design for Happy Living’ as a reference.

Lunch meeting ’Kaas eten van design’ (‘Knowing all about design’)| 22 October
Do managers and designers know each other’s business activities, do they know what they can mean to each other, and how much this could add to their professional success? Often enough, both ‘blood types’ seem to be insufficiently abreast of each other’s knowledge and ability. For this reason, Design Connection Brainport organises the first lunch meeting ‘Kaas eten van design’ during Dutch Design Week 2009. Within the scope of the exposition Brainport Design for Happy Living, the emphasis is on elucidating the valuable cooperation between all parties involved in the development of the industrial design product. And we do not stop at a cheese sandwich: there are many surprising design applications and unknown tastes. During this meeting, a number of finalists for the prestigious Design Management Europe Awards will therefore gather around the lunch table: Vlisco, Van Moof, and City Roofs. In less than an hour, Design Management expert Gert Kootstra will explain the importance of design management on the basis of their stories.

Lunch guests can make new discoveries about design in the afternoon. During a short presentation, Dutch Design Week director Hans Robertus will explain the programme. Together with Dutch Design Awards and Designhuis, we offer a passepartout for the most important design locations in the city.

The number of seats is limited, so make your reservations in time!
